Last time we packed out a sweaty basement at Railroad Cafe, in what can only be described as a poetry rave. This time it's going to be even bigger and better (though hopefully not as sweaty...)

This issue is The Postcard Issue, featuring a collection of poems written from the most unlikely of places, by poets such as Hollie McNish, Raymond Antrobus, Angry Sam and many many more. Illustrations come courtesy of the fantastic Sister Arrow, Tom Edwards and Lorna Scobie as well as plenty of other talented artists.

Get down at 7pm sharp to check out the live illustration and write your own postcard poem while DJ Vinyl Matt spins some tunes!

£5 entry includes your very own copy of issue #5 fresh off the presh!
Our friends over at YARN festival are putting together a stonkingly good poetry and storytelling night, 'The Special Relationship' over at the erudite Book Club in Shoreditch on Tuesday 1st May.

YARN celebrates stories and storytelling in all its tangled glory. They've been up in Birmingham as part of FlatPack festival recently, recreating the whole of Citizen Kane through the medium of storytelling, music, illustration and (strangely enough) film. We can't wait to check out one of their London-based ventures.

The Special Relationship is a regular monthly event bringing its audience fiction, non-fiction, comedy, music and illustration. Hosted by TOM BASDEN, regular readers, SAM TARADASH and JARRED McGINNIS, will be joined for some May mayhem by the almighty RICH FULCHER, the coconut's NIKESH SHUKLA and Mr tiny-plays, CRAIG TAYLOR.
We're incredibly hyped to announce that inc. magazine will be going on the road this summer in collaboration with London's best up and coming festival - LeeFest 2012!

Seven years on from the small garden in which it began, LeeFest has grown into an intimate weekend of music and mixed arts at Highams Hill Farm in Kent. With so many festivals now run just for profit, we love the fact that all money raised is going to Kids Company. LeeFest's DIY attitude is exactly what inc. zine is all about.

With that in mind, we're producing a special edition, limited-run zine especially for the festival featuring all the performers and artists which will be given away for free. As if that wasn't enough, we'll then bring the magazine to life onstage with live music and spoken word from the likes of acclaimed poets Dean Atta, Mr Gee (BBC Radio 4), Raymond Antrobus (Chill Pill), Angry Sam, Josh Seigal plus inc. regulars Glor Sanders and Will Conway (Lazy Gramophone). As if that wasn't enough, live illustration will adorn the walls, smiles will be plastered on everyone's faces and with any luck we'll make you a poetry convert before you can say 'rhyme time...'

LeeFest is between 29-30 Jun. It's only 20 minutes from London and accessible on an oyster card. Weekend tickets are £57 and on sale now atwww.leefest.org.uk. With the likes of Mystery Jets and the incredible 2Bears already confirmed, we suggest you get in there while you can...
inc. magazinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16729965216976915595noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2138567481037651106.post-45171976071854841752012-03-01T02:51:00.001-08:002012-03-01T02:53:24.933-08:00Issue #5 submissions now closed

We've had a breathtakingly large number of submissions for issue #5 of inc. magazine, written to the theme of 'place'. Many thanks to all those who kindly sent us their work! We're now rifling through them with large mugs of tea connected intravenously to select our favourite rhymes for illustration.

If you missed the deadline, don't worry, you can still get in touch with us anytime to introduce yourself, send over something you've been working on, or just have a good old chinwaggle. As always, our email address is inc.zine [at] gmail [dot] com. Illustrators, if you're quick we might still be able to consider you for this issue, just email us a bit about yourself and a link to your work online.

Keep your ears peeled (and join our mailing list) to keep up to date with inc. news and (gasp) the next launch party!
We've had a lovely review from BlogAndBuySale, a site that showcases artists and designers.

They say: "We thought you could only find good poetry in dusty old books, how wrong we were! ... We were blown away by the poetic masterpiece... A great fourth installment of inc.magazine bringing poetry into the 21st century and making it fun".

We say: Read the review in full here, marvel at BlogAndBuy's inspiring array of creative goods, and then without further ado grab yourself a copy of inc. #4 for just £4 including p&p right here!
UCL Young Writers Group have just launched their fourth zine, Still & Still Moving, packed with awesome poetry and prose all jumbled together with some authentic cut 'n' paste collage. It features stuff from the likes of Marta Owczarek, Bridget Minamore, Alexander Zhang and inc. zine's very own Anya Pearson (not to plug too much). Check it out in full colour on issuu here - though to get the full DIY effect you've really got to read the black and white photocopied version borrowed from someone in the know....

Here are some beautifully composed photos (courtesy of Matt Wheeler) which we hope will give you some idea of how much of a fun night it was.

Of course it's really impossible to capture the atmosphere, which was incredible. Over 70 sweaty people crammed into a tiny basement below Railroad Cafe, bearing the heat to listen to some amazing performances by Ben Mellor, Nichol Keene, Will Davies, Fur, The Yuya, and of course a couple of rhymes from incs. creators Will Coldwell and Anya Pearson. There was also some fantastic doodlings on the wall from Lorna Scobie, Hannah Simpson, Jenny Jackson and Simon Cheadle.

All our performers and contributors are definitely ones to watch!

Hearing chickens, and cows and sheep,

We craned our necks towards the street.

And from the window sought to seek,

The source of such sqwawks and moos and bleats.

But no such farmyard did transpire,

To exist beneath the telephone wires,

Instead there was, alive not dead,

A man with a hole in his head.

And strangely it all made sense,

The hole was simply an audio vent,
For if his crania was traditionally sealed,

Not a single sound would be revealed.

And, how would a creature even get in,

If there was not an entrance through the skin,

Past the membrane, flesh and hair,

To settle in his skully lair.

Thus every window is a door,

For animals, their sounds, and potentially more,

And if given the chance beasts will bed,

Within a head, as has just been said.

And while from the window our eyes were scanning,

The street below to explain this farm yard jamming,

The man with a hole planned his proposals banning,

Involuntary agricultural trepanning.

Will Coldwell

inc. magazinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16729965216976915595noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2138567481037651106.post-88617797522505971042011-10-22T06:37:00.000-07:002011-10-22T06:37:31.225-07:00DJ Royale presents...

The show combines the weeks news with the finest cuts of wax from the funk, soul and hip hop scenes, to give you current affairs you can tap your feet to.

On the first show there's Soulful comments on the Liam Fox affair with the help of The Bamboos, a tribute to Steve Jobs from The Apples, a musical analysis of Silvio Burlesconi and much much more…

If you're about on Sunday afternoon get on down to Wilton Way Cafe, where I'll be taking on my musical alter-ego DJ Royale to present The SOUL Report.
It's going to be a news infused funk, soul and hip-hop bonanza that will hopefully put a bit of a spring back in your step at the end of the weekend.

We've found another couple of stockists for inc. #3. One is Lik + Neon, a wonderful little shop off Brick Lane selling design collectables, sweet t-shirts, art books and a good selection of zines. Check out the stuff by Tom Edwards, a long-time inc. contributor. Lik + Neon also has a resident in-store feline which is a definite plus.

We've also given some copies to T-co-SE, who are a cafe/gallery just opening in Dulwich. This is a new collaborative project between young local artists who want to sell their own work in a self sustained environment. Go down for a cup of Sri Lankan fair trade tea and a browse of their stuff. They open today.
We met Sam as he was traveling in the Himalayas, and left him sleeping in a cave on a bed of bracken with just goats for company (we'd taken only tent). The goats would unfortunately attempt to eat the bracken when he wasn't looking. These vivid poems are from a selection written during his time in India and Australia. Enjoy!

1. Power-cut at dusk

Headlights falter
as cars
slalom daintily
down the black
board of the mountain.

Fireflies bridge the valley’s gap
trailing ticker tapes
of greenish stars.

With a gasp
power comes back.

The hills abruptly stage
the nested lights
of tiny settlements
and darkness is repealed
like a new struck seam
of diamonds or
like opening your eyes
to find the same darkness
awash with stars.

2. Dog

On a high mountain road
we hit a dog.
It flew beneath the wheel
like a pale bird.

It made two thuds like a
Pothole and was dead.

I looked back and saw another dog
standing in the wake of the event,
its lips pursed like a wolf
in a howl of grief.

The driver glanced at
the rear view mirror.
We continued alongside
the clear cool river.

3. Goat

Two of the drums
are the pure pulse
of the goat’s temples.

The third is the dirty mind
of the man with a knife.

Goat-skinned, hormonal,
the drums stack-up
their beats into the open
heart of the sky.

Building, building, bloody and reeling.
The goat screams from the root
of its held legs
and lengthens its stainless neck.

The scorpion-arch of the man’s arm falls
As the drum sticks kick back.
Three blows

and the head is cleanly separated from the animal.
The corpse bucks and bleeds a puddle.

A man smiles a human smile.
Crimson and opaque
it glints between the cobbles.

Lastly, in silence,
a dog bows its head and laps up the spillage,
gratefully and completely.

On a high mountain road
we hit a dog.
It flew beneath the wheel
like a pale bird.

It made two thuds like a
Pothole and was dead.

I looked back and saw another dog
standing in the wake of the event,
its lips pursed like a wolf
in a howl of grief.

The driver glanced at
the rear view mirror.
We continued alongside
the clear cool river.
inc. magazinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16729965216976915595noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2138567481037651106.post-1584772999590858742011-09-11T16:33:00.000-07:002011-09-11T16:49:47.094-07:00King Fly

King Fly

Cup of tea. Milk jug.
Sugar bowl. Lift lid.
Big surprise.
Big fly.
Humungous fly.
King Fly.
Rubbing at a sugar grain,
Like a lamp in Aladdin's cave
King Fly.
Hiding there for days and weeks,
As one of Darwin's winning suites
King fly.
Growing as the pile shrinks,
In bulbous eyes white crystal glints
King Fly.
Refract a kaleidoscope of sin,
Lord of all that's saccharine
King Fly.
And from the depths of sweet decay:
"Bit busy here, can you go away?"
Good stuff - keep them coming...
There once was a whore with a punter
Called him small; she could’ve been blunter
So the runt pulled a stunt
When he punted her cunt
And walked out and called her a munter
"I'm one of the top fashionistas"
Gerald revealed to the lovely barista
He hoped she wouldn't mind
When she found out in time
He's really a barrister for Shell.
PJ Harvey said to her mama,
Why did you name me Pajama,
Why PJ she cried,
We tried and we tried,
But to get you out of bed was always a drama.
